4 hours; 4 creditsThis course examines, singly or in combination, genres such as poetry, drama, novel, short story, legend, memoir, scientific writing, sermons, essays, letters, and political writing, within some or all of the following historical and cultural modes: Native American literatures, narratives of exploration and conquest, Puritan and other early American religious writings, African-American literature, Federalist literature, and the variety of gothic, sentimental, transcendental, and realistic narratives characteristic of the nineteenth century.
