Course Title

Science as an Inquiry in Early Childhood

Description

Teacher candidates will learn how to plan and implement meaningful and developmentally appropriate, thematic investigations that educate and challenge young children. Teacher candidates will be guided in planning and implementing curriculum, and developing experiential learning environments that foster children to be actively engaged in ways that they: generate curiosity, ask poignant questions, pose challenges, play, solve problems, notice discoveries, and enhance and extend their understanding of scientific concepts of familiar natural phenomena. Teacher candidates will also learn a range of strategies for supporting, yet still challenging, students with exceptionalities. Teacher candidates will learn formal and informal assessment tools and practices appropriate for assessing students engaging in inquiry- based learning; strategies appropriate for both whole- and small-group instruction. The course will also enrich teacher candidates with educational technologies for instructing young children. Requires a minimum of twenty (20) fieldwork hours in a variety of possible educational contexts.
